SUSANNA, daughter of Llywelyn the Great and Joan (Siwan) Plantagenet, Lady of Wales, born c.1216.
Aged around 12 years old, Susanna was sent to England and placed in the custody of her uncle, King Henry III. Susanna was almost certainly being held in England as a hostage to ensure the good behaviour of her father, Llywelyn the Great, who had been pursuing to expand his kingdom.
In 1228, Nicholas de Verdun appeared to be in Henry III’s favor, and this favor manifested itself when the king’s …..‘dear and faithful Nicholas de Verdun and his wife Clementia [le Boteler] were granted custody of ‘Susanna’ our niece, the daughter of Llywelyn, Prince of North Wales and Joanna his wife, to be brought up safe and secure without all injury.’
Clementia (mother of Joan and mistress of King John) was almost certainly Susanna’s maternal grandmother.
Susanna married Malcolm MacDuff, Earl of Fife in 1230 and had two children:
- Sir Colbran macDuff, Earl of Fife, born 1245, died 1270
- MacDuff macDuff born 1247.
Susanna died c. 1259 in Dumfermline, Fife, Scotland.
