Delve into the captivating history of the iconic Caterham 7 S3 sportscar – a masterpiece that traces its roots back to the legendary Lotus. The Caterham 7 S3, born out of a lineage rich in motorsport heritage and engineering excellence, represents the culmination of innovation and passion for driving.
The origins of the Caterham 7 S3 can be found in the Lotus 7, a groundbreaking creation by Colin Chapman’s Lotus Engineering in the late 1950s. Chapman’s design philosophy focused on minimalism, lightweight construction, and unparalleled driving dynamics. The Lotus 7 quickly became a cult classic among driving enthusiasts for its raw, unadulterated driving experience.
Fast forward to the 1970s when Caterham, a British sports car manufacturer, acquired the rights to the Lotus 7. This marked a pivotal moment in the history of the Caterham 7 S3, as Caterham took on the mantle of continuing Lotus’ legacy while infusing their unique touches into the design. The result was a vehicle that remained true to its heritage yet evolved with modern advancements.

The Caterham 7 was made famous in the 1960s by the cult TV series ‘The Prisoner’, where the sports car, in its distinctive green and yellow, featured prominently in the first episode and the opening title sequence used on all 17 episodes.
The series was created by and starred Patrick McGooghan, who had previously starred as the secret agent John Drake in ‘Danger Man’, another show made for the legendary Lord Lew Grade’s ATV/ITC.
‘The Prisoner’ was filmed just down the road from Brook Cottage Shepherd Huts at Sir Clough Willams-Ellis’s masterpiece Italianesque village, Portmeirion, which in itself is world famous and has hosted many international stars over the years, from writers, artists and musicians, including George Harrison and ‘The Beatles’, to politicians and royalty.
